You'd think with some time off between jobs I'd relax, but apparently I'm keeping myself pretty busy.
There's no point to this post, really. Oh yeah, I'm 26, and I was realizing the other day - next presidential election I'll be a week off of 30.
Sobering.
And honestly I don't care who you vote for. Both candidates are better than what we've had these past eight years. So get out there and vote, please.
Thank you.
Only about a dozen rooms left to do now... :)
Went to the BMW dealership, he showed me the papers on the bike they've got. It's a 'was for somebody else but they decided not to buy it' bike and is at another dealership currently. They're shipping it over to the local dealership now, should be in tomorrow or Friday.
They're optimistic that I can ride off the lot Saturday. But we'll see, they're always quite optimistic and seem to exist in some bubble world. Anyway.
Matthew: F650GS, Azure Blue, ABS, On-Board Computer, Heated Grips, Tire Pressure Monitor, White Turn Indicators, Center Stand. The last three are the options I didn't request on "my" bike, the the price difference is only about $300, so eh. I'll take them to be able to ride sooner.
If all goes well, I'll have wheels again Saturday.
...dammit, I've got a moving truck on Saturday!
Does anybody know how to get what the current position is in an open fd? In effect, I'm looking at a process (for example, gzip, tar, cat, etc) and I want to see how far along a file it has read. I can see what file it's in with lsof, I can see what data it's reading with strace, but I can't seem to figure out how to determine how far along it is.
Notably, this would be useful for getting progress indicators on things. Yeah, it's going to be inaccurate for small files due to buffering, but for a large operation it should be reasonably reliable in telling you the general location of the operation.
I've pondered this for a while now and can't think of anything that doesn't involve writing my own kernel module or something that parses the strace output and then tries to find that sequence of bytes in the file (unreliable and inefficient) or just counting the bytes read (strikes me as still inefficient, and doesn't work on an already-started process).
Anybody have any ideas?
In other news, my long time friend Jeremy (
Next: dinner?
I'm far more productive in the 6PM-2AM time period than at any other point. Have just spent the past few hours knocking out bugs and tasks for work that I haven't gotten around to during the day simply because I'm usually not near peak operating capacity until after the day is "over".
Always used to be this way at Danga/6A/CCP too. Meetings in the day, real hardcore productivity and coding after the sun went down.
Oh yeah, and I'm on call this week. But it's been a very, very light week as far as pages go. Quite happy about that.
I also have a Twitter account now. I bet you can guess how to find it. Not entirely certain about whether or not I'm going to actually use it, but you can follow me if you want.
I'm happy to provide details, but in general, we're looking for someone who knows network stuff really well (we do have data centers on three continents plus offices, etc) but is also interested in systems administration. There's a lot of variety to the work this position entails. :)
Anyway, you don't have to be local to California to apply or be interested, either. We have really good benefits, competitive pay, all that good stuff. I'm happy to chat about the position and details, just ping me.
Comments screened or you can find me on various IM services or via email if you have questions or are interested.
Right now, I'm using normal soft lenses. I.e., not correcting for the astigmatism. Originally we were using a -4.00 lens, both to make it more convenient (my left eye is -4.00 with no astigmatism, it'd be more convenient to share the same lens type), and to try to correct for the astigmatism by overpowering the eye. (Apparently a common trick for minor astigmatisms like mine.)
Anyway, it was causing me to get some headache type symptoms and it was still somewhat hard to see with that eye the way it is. The doctor lowered me to the "real" prescription for that eye, which has mostly resolved the headache issue (almost, still minor) but vision is somewhat more problematic now. My right eye is a lot (relatively) more fuzzy than my left. It's only really noticeable when I'm on the computer, though, out and about in the world they're close enough not to really matter.
I'm not quite sure what to do. The doctor said my astigmatism versions of contacts don't really start until magnitude 0.75 so I'm not quite there yet, not to mention toric lenses (the kind that correct for astigmatism) are a lot more fussy than regular lenses. They have to be positioned just so, etc. Not really the kind of thing I want to be messing with if I can avoid it.
I think I'll just keep plugging along with my current -4.00/-3.75 combination of regular soft lenses and see if I adjust. I think I probably will be fine given some time for my brain to get used to not being able to use the right eye quite as much for detail work. I hope, anyway.
I know that part of Web 2.0 is that feeling of being connected, of not having to think or worry about missing something. But I'm starting to feel that is, what is the phrase, "lipstick on a pig." It's still spam mail!
For example, I use Mint.com to do some financial analysis of spending habits and the like. Yet every time there's a fee (ATM Fee, Savings Transfer Fee, whatever), they send me an email "Oooh fees suck and you got hit with one!" They also send me weekly wrap-up emails and other emails letting me know certain things have cleared. They've also decided to email me when my credit cards (all two of them) are due, but I don't need that.
I'm certain there are ways to tell them to stop doing this in the settings. But then we roll back to the argument of opt-in vs. opt-out. Kind of annoying to have to figure out which buttons to tick to have it stop pissing emails at me every day.
Your thoughts? Are these Web 2.0 Wunderkind way too email happy?
It looks like it might be raining tomorrow. We'll see I guess, but if it is, I don't think we can go. Outdoor activity + rain = not much fun. Will have to see how the weather goes tomorrow.
PS, it's raining! I'm so happy. I really am not a fan of the weather here in general, but the winter rainy season is my favorite. Hurrah!
In other other news, contacts are exciting! I keep feeling like I should post a picture but well, it'd just be me without glasses. Not much imagination required there.
As Janine said, we have contacts now. Trial run for the week to see how it goes, but I'm pretty positive. They're annoying to put in and take out, but that will get easier with time. I don't seem to feel them as much as Janine, and I like how the world looks. I'll probably try to stick with them full time.
That's about it. Going up to the city today to meet with Andrew and Chris(py) from WPI. That should be fun! Stinking Rose, methinks, if these guys like garlic. (I hope I hope.)
So, violin lessons are going well. Or were. We just 'turned a corner' in the book and now we're doing something other than the two major scales that the violin does with normal (second finger high) fingering. I've never done this before - when I was playing as a kid I didn't go this far in the book? Anyway, I have to learn a new fingering (second finger low) and it is throwing me off.
In the immortal words of someone... fuck the G Major scale, right in the ear. I've played it no less than seventy billion times today and the rest of the week will be the same. (And trying to do some sort of minuet by Bach... yeah, I'll let you know how that goes.)
Don't let my bitching make you think I'm not enjoying playing and lessons. I am. It's a great thing that is not in my normal repertoire and I'm really enjoying it. But still. G Major? We're not friends. Maybe one day, maybe. But not right now.
